Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
If you are reading this then Phase one of the new site has probably been deployed!
In summary it is a Drupal based site focusing on Blogs and Image Galleries. All customizations were done using Drupal modules. It has no custom code; not a single line; so it should be easy to keep up-to-date. Even so the site offers a wide range of features for the club's members. For example, a more-or-less WYSIWYG editor for posts; one that supports adding existing pictures from the site into your post or uploading one from the editor.
The forums have been drastically pared down. Most of the old sites forums when unused. So I have consolidated them into a dramatically smaller list. However, if there becomes a need I can easily add more.
I also had to guess what image galleries and blog categories we would want. If you need me to add some more just let me know.
There are a few important missing features from the first phase:
- Email notifications have not been set up. This is because I can not really test this on the development server. This has a number of side effects
- New users can only get accounts by emailing me. They can not simply sign up for an account
- Existing users can not reset their passwords without emailing me
- Users are not notified when comments are posted to their nodes (images, blog posts, forum topics, etc.)
- Users can not subscribe to nodes.
- The style of the site is not club or hobby specific. It is still more-or-less a plain-old Drupal site.
The email notification features are part of phase two which will be completed by the end of the first quarter (hopefully a lot sooner). Making a custom theme for the site is phase three and should be done in the second quarter of the year.
Can't Wait For Phase Two?
If you want to have an account on this site you can send an email to editor at mabg dot org. Please include your real name, a valid email address and a list of any ships you currently own or are building.

Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
I have verified that existing users can reset their passwords by email.
I made a few small changes this morning.
I am going to spend some time working on the links page. I would like it to be able to group links into categories. Strangely Drupal's views module does not do this directly.
Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
The links page has been redone to group the links by taxonomy (category). Club members can also add links (under Create Content in your Navigation Menu to the left). That is a wrap for me this weekend. Have a nice Sunday!
Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
Brian,
I found I was unable to reach this site from my home ISP (Verizon FiOS) and it was redirecting me to the Verizon 404 (were you trying to find....) page. I am unable to resolve the domain with the Verizon DNS at this time. I can still reach here from my work network, and others who aren't on FiOS/Verizon can reach it as well. If it is still a problem tonight, I'll contact Verzion and see what is going on.
Charles
Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
We temporarily lost our domain name but the problem has been corrected. However, depending on when and how often your ISP refreshes their DNS cache the site may not be available for everyone.
Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
While I think the site generally looks and feels very nice, I do wish some of the links were a bit larger. For instance, the relpy buttons, the voting stars and maybe a few others would be nice if they were larger. I also just noticed that the "Big Guns, Cool Boats, Great Friends" at the top is pretty much unreadable. I have no idea how hard any these things are to change but I figured I would at least point them out.
Re: Phase 1 of New Website Deployed
All good points. The style we are currently using is an off-the-shelf style I downloaded. Later in the spring (Phase 3 above) I plan to work on a more specialized style. Keep the suggestions coming and I will try and include them in phase 3.
