Weight & Space Efficient Depression

Brett Fleming and I were brainstorming about depression earlier this week and he had a great idea - just sandwich tubing between the barrel bends and the barrel bracket. After spending a couple of days to decide if I could come up with anything better (I couldn't) I roughed one out this afternoon and fired a few rounds through it. There is good news and bad news...

The Good News

It seems to work great. No more hose clamps! The entire barrel assembly is held together by two screws - one that loosely (but securely) holds the barrel bracket to the barrel bends and then one that holds the barrel bends securely to the breech. In the picture you can see the tubing but the screw in between the barrels is obscured.

The Bad News

The bad news is it looks like I need a little more volume in my accumulators. The cannons seem to still be firing a little weak. I had a small CO2 leak. I will fix that and test with some test foam and see what happens.

I really should update old posts more often...  Since writing this blog entry I have tested the barrels and they performed significantly better than a traditional barrel bend. I even tryied to give the traditional barrel the advantage by not having a flexible joint in it. So this is definately how Nassau's barrels will be installed.

We also fired a ton of rounds though this cannon at the North Carolina Maker Faire. So I have no concerns about the design holding up to repeated use.
