Club Shirts

Has anyone heard anything more about shirts with the club patch?

Recently Mary and I were at JoAnn Fabrics, and ran into some friends of ours who were taking a sewing class there.   I learned a lot about the machine they have for sale there.

They have sewing machines there that can also do embroidery from designs created on a computer!

Mary commented about having her and our daughter taking a class there.

Of course my mind went straight to embroidering our club patches.

Re: Club Shirts

Just a suggestion.

When we go to have Club Shirts made, I think that it would be better if we enlarge the print on the logo.

As you can see, our name is barely readable. The Club Motto almost disappears!

Re: Club Shirts

How about two changes?

  1. change the color of the text to one that contrast's better
  2. place "mabg.org" in large black text below the logo?

Re: Club Shirts

I will work with it.

But I did not want to change anything without the "Clubs" permission.

Re: Club Shirts

I would also think a hat might be a good option as well... I may see if I can get the pattern stitched into a hat (especially for sun-shade pond-side)

Re: Club Shirts

I like the idea of a hat as well.

The patch I had made for the shirt is a four inch patch.

I had chose the four inch size because that what is needed to cover a print that I have on an old jacket.

Mary thinks that the four inch size is too big for a shirt, and I was thinking of using a five inch size.

Getting back to the hat idea.

A hat would take a three inch patch.

I wonder if I will be able to make the new superstructure for Lumpy, redo the patch and have a hat, shirt and jacket done by the faire?????

Re: Club Shirts

If you have the time getting us some flyers would be a huge help for me. I had expected some flyers to arrive today which only needed to have labels added to them... but they did not come in. So I am in a bit of a bind.

Re: Club Shirts

note to all: Tom and I discussed during a pause (one of about two) at Maker Faire, doing a Naval Style hat akin to that which Brian and I were wearing at Maker Faire (thanks to David for those hats) with a gold-on-black MABG logo.

I did a little digging, and there are some cheap Costume Hats (amazon seems to have the best deals) in that style. We'd just need to get an embroiderd MABG (gold-on-black) patch to go on the hat. Prices seem to range between about $3 to $20 for the hats, the patches I haven't looked at yet.

Re: Club Shirts

During my lunch break, I checked out pricing.  The cheapest hats are about $9.00 each.

The best looking ones are over $30.00

Have not had any time to devote to looking into having the patch made for the hat.

Re: Club Shirts

I would rather we go for the best looking ones - so long as the patches will not cheapen how they look. Its not like we will be buying dozens of these things.

Re: Club Shirts

Agreed. I would say a high quality hat, with a high quality patch.

Regarding the patch: I'm thinking gold on black, with the ships in silver, and the states either in solid gold (with black lines) or just gold outlines.

The other question for the patch is: Do we want the "scrambled eggs" around the logo, or do we want a simple circular logo patch? Or do we want a completely different marking for this sort of thing?

I'll see if I can come up with some demos of what I have in mind tonight.

Re: Club Shirts

I say yes to the scrambled eggs on the bill of the hat.

Re: Club Shirts

I am done will all of the Mother's day computer graphics.

so now I can work on the patch on my ride home from work.

I have several ideas.  As soon as I can put them together I shall post for everyone to see.

Re: Club Shirts

I didn't mean scrambled eggs on the brim, I think that's definite. I was thinking of them around the base of the patch (reference the hat I am wearing in my avatar - that we had at the Faire.  Something like a trapezoid with the circular logo in the middle, with the scrambled eggs around the base:   /.O.\  vs: / O \ or O

I'll generate some quick graphics for it tonight (didn't get to it last night)

Re: Club Shirts

Before I left the office for home, I made a detour in the Pentagon and popped into the clothing sales store.

A Naval Captain’s hat frame, (The bill with the scrambled eggs, and the band that goes around the head) was either $22.00 or $32.00, I can’t remember now. For the white cloth cover it is another $10.25. This of course is without a device.

Proposed Hat "device" or Logo

Probably some proportions need to change, but basically the Black Boats on the standard logo move to Silver, the states are either solid gold or outlined gold (black states). I'm kinda in favor of the scrambled eggs, but probably not quite laid out in this fashion (a little wider spread around tthe base of the logo perhaps).

Re: Proposed Hat "device" or Logo

I am guessing that the states will need to each be a different color - otherwise they will not be distinguishable from each other in the embroidering.

We have not decided to get any yet...  At this point we are just gathering information and deciding what we want.

Re: Proposed Hat "device" or Logo

Hi Nikki;

The shirt I am wearing is NOT the official Club Shirt.

The patch is just an iron on I made with my computer and printer.

I found that the patches are good for only one use!

These patches do not hold up to machine washing.

I then have to print a new patch and sew it onto the shirt.

When we do get Club Shirts, they will be embroidered.

Re: Proposed Hat "device" or Logo

Hi Nikki;

I have a feeling that once the club gets going again, we will do the T-shirt thing, and get some hats as well.

My thoughts were to Captain's hats for the skippers and baseball hats with the club patch for non-captains.

A good distance down the road, my goal is for Mary to get a sewing machine that does embroidery, that way we can make our own patches!

Mary and I were in a fabric store and saw various sewing machines.  The folks there told me that you just hook up the sewing machine to a computer using a USB cable and then the sewing machine does all the work!

Take care of yourself.

Re: Club Shirts

Hi all;

I have been thinkng about the club shirt.

I have learned that the iron on patches do NOT hold up in the laundry.

What I have done, is to iron the patch onto a seperate sheet of cloth then 'tack' sew it to a shirt.

That way the patch can be removed for the shirt to be cleaned.

I hope to have a number of patches made for the club soon.

Re: Club Shirts

Sounds Great Tom! Thanks.

Make certain you cordinate with Charles on the details.

Re: Club Shirts

I have four patches finished.

I am now working on a second set of four.

Re: Club Shirts

Here is a sheet of patches.

The big patches are four inches across, the small ones are 2 1/4.

The patches are printed on cotton, then the cotton sheet is attached to a canvas backing.

Who needs a patch for the Makers Faire?   I have them ready to mail out!
