Building a U-Joint

So, I determined it was time to replace the U-Joints on Missouri. The U-joints that came with Seydlitz were pefect for the job, so I went out in search of a matching pair this morning. Unfortunately, I got met with blank stares at my local RC Hobby shop (repleat with boats, planes, helicopters and cars - but a U-joint for a scratch-built boat.... unthinkable!), so I scoured the racks in search of suitable parts to make my own.

 U-Joint Parts

The white U-joints are the models taken from Seydlitz, the black parts are the U-joint sub-assemblies I was able to acquire. There are also 4 lose (and 4 pacakged) 5/32" collars, a 1/8" brass tube (top) that matches the prop-shafts and the output shafts from the motors, and a 5/32" brass tube that fits inside the collars, and outside the shafts.

U-Joint sub-assembly

Here we see a cut-down U-joint end, with a lenght of the 5/32" tube. I force-fit the 5/32" tube inside the U-Joint base. There is a notch cut in the end of the tube, allowing the set-screw to press against the inner shaft, and provide rotational lock with the remainder of the assembly.

U-Joint Installed

Since I didn't quite get these U-joints as short as the originals, I decided to use the originals in Missouri, and installed these longer replacements in Seydlitz. If the force-fit of the brass tubes winds up slipping, I can later put a pin through the assembly ends to prevent slipping.

Can you please change those images so they at least link to previews? Thanks

Done. Thought I had done that in the first place, but now I have verified that they work too.

Re: Building a U-Joint

Your u-joints look great. Why didn't you go with an off-the-shelf solution like Dumas Couplers (AKA: dog-bones)

Re: Building a U-Joint

Because I couldn't find them at my local RC Parts store... I'm not saying they don't carry them, I couldn't find them - and nobody there seemed to have any kind of understanding of anything that wasn't a specific kit. Odd, really, it's a great store with booming business - I was shocked by the lack of understanding by the staff I dealt with on Saturday.

Of course I will put in a plug for Awesome RC Hobbies.

The owner has always been will to go the extra step for our club.

I do believe that he has even extended to us a 10% discount.

Re: Building a U-Joint

I added a link for them on the links page so you will not have to post their URL in your comments. This allows us to update the URL in one place if it changes. In the future you can refer people to the http://mabg.org/links page.

Re: Building a U-Joint

The custom fittings will be a nice conversation starter anyway. Its too bad the staff at the local hobby store is not more knowledgeable.
