Sailing Huntington

I took Huntington out for a sail this weekend and I was very surprised when she went dead in the water after maybe 30 minutes of sailing around.  I have not determined the cause as of yet but since it happened shortly after switching battery packs (for no particular reason), I am slightly suspect of the battery pack that I swapped in.  It was however raining pretty hard out at one point and the seas were pretty rough.  Luckily, we managed to rescue her.

It is sad that her otherwise flawless record has been tarnished.

No one else saw it... and I don't believe it... so it never happened   The tug's record is safe.

Re: Sailing Huntington

I think I have located a component of the cause.  I tried to charge the pack in question and the protection circuit board in the pack quckly went into protection mode.  This didn't tell me much other than the fact that there was something definitely wrong with that pack.  So, I pulled the heatshrink off and found some evidence of a short or at least a high current draw at some point in the pack's history since some of the heat shrink had be heated to the point of breaking.  I googled around and did some thinking and figured out how to connect the pack with makeshift individual cell monitoring leads (balance taps) and found that one pair of the cells was heavily discharged while the other pair was more than fully charged.

The lesson I have learned is that I probably need to make sure these packs are sealed against water better and to open the other pack and add permanent balance taps to both for proper monitoring and charging.  My charger has been plugging away at correcting this massive imbalance for several hours now and I expect a full recovery thanks to the built in protection circuitry.

I am still very much looking forward to taking Huntington out to see if she really has the power to assist the larger ships in the club.  As of right now, I have a feeling that she is going to need upgrades but I'm not sure how I am going to achieve those power plant upgrades with out pushing one or more components past their ratings.  I think she needs larger and more powerful motors.  While the motors she has work, I suspect that I am pushing them well beyond their specifications and that to assist ships, she is going to need to have more precise propulsive power than she now has.

Re: Sailing Huntington

Call me sometime and we can schedule a time taking Lion out for you to practice with. I've been working on Nassau's CO2 plumbing but I can take Lion otu for a couple of hours. I will start charging batteries tonight.
