Target Practice August 14, 2010
We keep having small private events around the state but a statewide meet that is open to the public is long overdue. So on August 14, 2010 we will meet at Camp Alta Mons. I have already verified that the pond is available for us to use and reserved that afternoon.
This is a great opportunity for people to meet some of the club's members and see some of the ships first hand. There should be a great variety of ships present; everything from a small unarmed LST to WWI warships like battlecruiser HMS Lion and all the way up to large super battleships like HMS King George V, HMS Lion and a recently refit USS Missouri. This really is a great chance for you to get your questions answered and see some really interesting ship models
BTW: Club members should keep most of their discussion in the event planning topic for this event.
Who Can Attend?
This event is open to the public. Camp Alta Mons is a wonderful place for families. There is a nice hiking trail to a beautiful waterfall. There is also a very nice pool which is open to the public on weekends. Check out their website for more details. Club members should bring their own safety goggles but we have a large supply of goggles we loan out to visitors.
Lunch & Target Practice
This date is very ambitious for some of the boats to be ready. The purpose of this meet is to work the kinks out of several boats and get together as a club. It will be part social event, part work-day, part target practice.
Many of the club's members will be meeting for lunch at Macados in Salem, Virginia at 11:00 am. Non-members are welcome to join but please let Brian know so he can reserve a seat for you. The club is not paying for lunch - each person attending is responsible for their own check.
Please note the lunch plans are still being firmed up - check this page for updates.
Directions to Macados
Macados is located on Main Street in the old downtown of Salem; off of exit 140 on Interstate 81. You can get directions from Google Maps, the Macados website, or point your GPS to 211 East Main Street, Salem, Virginia 24153.
Directions to Camp Alta-Mons
The camp's address is 2842 Crockett Springs Road in Shawsville, Virginia 24162. You can get directions for Google Maps or from the camp's website. The camp is located in beautiful southwest Virginia. The event annoucement lists Blacksburg but the camp is much closer to Roanoke.
Other Goings-On
Mighty Mo
The club's currently oldest ship, Charles' USS Missouri should be making its return to the water this weekend. The Mighty Mo's refit is nearing completion. The 14th is an ambitious schedule for getting Mo's aging cannons firing again after the "Great Cats Disaster of 2010". However hopes are running high.
Nassau
This will be the first meet that my SMS Nassau attends. However, it looks like it will still be a week or so away from sailing at the time of the meet. However, this will be the first opportunity for the club to see Nassau's turrets installed in the boat. I am still hoping to have Nassau on the water for the meet but it is not looking very likely right now as I will have family visiting this week (unless my visiting nephew takes an interest in working on the ship with me!)
New Member
Our newest member, Eric, will take possession of the infamous battlecruiser HMS Lion "Cub". This will be Eric's first meet so come out and say hello!
Update: Aug 10:
Posting was updated to make it clear this is mostly a work-day with limited target practice. Lunch plans were added.

your pal,
Nikki
Re: Target Practice August 14, 2010
Right now it looks like Charles, Eric, William and I will be there skippering warships. Tom is out of the country so he will not be there. If we have an extra unarmed ship then Kyle will probably want to run that.
Re: Target Practice August 14, 2010
I'm planning to be there with Huntington and possibly something to use for target practice.
Re: Target Practice August 14, 2010
So by "and possibly something to use for target practice" you mean in addition to Huntington?
I am gald you will be there Drew. William confirmed he is joining us this weekend. He claims that KGV is not in fighting trim but the time I checked all he needed was a new safety value. So he should be able to participate in the target practice.
Re: Target Practice August 14, 2010

Brian,
Do you guys have a Rondey and a Bismarck in the club?? and If I was wondering if you can do her last fight at one of the battles?

Re: Target Practice August 14, 2010
We have a Bismarck but its skipper has been unable to attend meets for a while for personal reasons. We do not have a Rodney (yet)
