New Frontier - USS Cimarron (AO-22)

The adventure begins . . . I received the plans for the USS Cimarron last evening. It appears that the first project will be roughly 3 ft 10 inches with a beam of 6 1/4 inches. I have a very excited son who is ready to jump right into shipbuilding. I have been reorganizing my workshop and plan to been done this weekend. As my work on the ship progresses, I will post progress updates to my blog with pictures.

Were you able to make any progress this weekend?

Re: New Frontier - USS Cimarron (AO-22)

It appears that I am going to have to build the ship from the keel up because I cannot find a readily available fiberglass hull.  So I am researching the best methodology for doing this.  Thus far I have marked up my working copy of my plans so that I can construct the frames with the appropriate spacing.  I have also been looking at various vendors for the guts of the ship.  I am just about ready to start whole sale purchasing of these items.

Sounds good - freighters are relatively simple so they are a great first scratch build project. Let me know if you have any questions and keep us posted about your progress!

Hey Ken. I just read your blog and I know of a couple of threads people did of how to make the wooden hull of a ship from start to finish. The first one is well organized and shows a lot of good information, but is maybe less thourogh than I would have liked.

The second one gets into the process a bit more nitty gritty, but is rather unorganized as there are mutiple people posting...it might get kinda confusing. That and it takes a page or two before the thread even gets to starting the build. Technically its about the cheapest way of building a ship...this just also happens to be via a wooden hull.

good luck.
